As coffee has grown in popularity with consumers – it has become an equally popular area of study. One particular area of interest is coffee’s health benefits and what better time to look at it than January, a time of year when nearly everybody seems to be on a health kick.

In short, coffee is loaded with antioxidants and beneficial nutrients that can improve your health. Studies show that coffee drinkers have a much lower risk of several serious diseases. So as you enjoy your cup of Cafe2U coffee, let’s take a look at some of the main benefits of drinking it and a couple of tips to make it even healthier…

  • Healthier ways to flavour your coffee

Although coffee is healthy in itself, you can easily turn it into something harmful. Adding lots of sugar to your beverage is certainly one way to do this. There are many alternatives to sugar that you can consume, such as honey, stevia and coconut sugar.  Here at Cafe2U we have sugar free alternative syrups such as, the new sugar free Gingerbread syrup and sugar free vanilla. We also have plenty of milk alternatives like Soya, Coconut or Almond.

  • Coffee can be good for your heart

Studies have shown that it doesn’t increase your blood pressure long term, as is sometimes misreported. Research has shown that consumption of two to four cups of coffee a day can reduce the risk of stroke. A study of healthy young adults in Korea found that, compared with people who didn’t drink coffee, those who drank three to five cups of coffee per day also had a lower risk of having calcium deposits in their coronary arteries, which is an indicator of heart disease.

  • Caffeine increases mental alertness

Caffeine blocks adenosine, an inhibitory neurotransmitter that makes you tired and less alert – meaning you are more on the ball after a coffee. Studies also show that caffeine can improve responsiveness, memory, attentiveness and mental function.

  • Lowers risk of cancers

Coffee appears to be protective against two forms of cancer – liver and colorectal cancer. Liver cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in the world, while colorectal cancer ranks fourth. Studies show that coffee drinkers who drink 4-5 cups of coffee a day have up to a 40% lower risk.
